Well kids and coaches, I got to see yet another week of state championship games come and go and I go to listen to more and more nonsense from all sides. So, my crack team here at S.U.N. Coaches got together and have devised a system that both sides and the middle of all classification arguments are sure to get on board with. If they don't, it doesn't matter because we are not the GHSA anyway!
So, we will start by letting the private schools back in. There, they are happy happy happy now. Competitive balance is not needed, oh no, not at all. The S.U.N. model, as you will see will take care of all of the perceived issues to make Georgia High School Athletics as equitable as can be. Equitable and "fair" are not the same mind you, so keep that in mind moving forward. Now, where were I, oh yes, privates back in. If, IF you participate in at least half 1/2 of the sanctioned activities. So all of you fly by night, frontage Rd, Suite 25 located next to the Subway in a strip mall "private" schools that just play basketball or some such other, you out.
Now, number next, you will be classified initially as always based on enrollment. Easy bread. Now for the fix: AFTER you have been slotted by enrollment, we will count your FORM B's for the ENTIRE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT. Male, female, other, don't matter. Use them well is all we have to tell you. If you have <4 on a 2 year classification on average, you move up one classification. ADs, Head coaches, principals, all of ya'll gonna have to WORK TOGETHER to get the numbers right and maybe get some multiple sport athletes in. You have 5-9 Form B's, you move up 2 classes. You have 10 or more, you go to the SUPER CLASS. There is only one appeal, the Form B sits a year and plays JV ONLY.
Now I can hear you all now, typing away and rolling your eyes and even cussing me. That's fine. Don't matter. This is equitable. I heard people say, "well, everyone has move in's...everyone had "bought teams"...blah blah blah." Well, ok, if that is a fact, then use this system and then, THEN those people will be playing against each other doing the same things.
What happens if they monkey the system you ask? Well, the AD, principal, and head coach get fired. YEP F-I-R-you don't work here no mo E-D. They all have to sign off on it and are all in cahoots according to most of ya'll anyway, so, you get caught cheating this new system, Death penalty forfeit the season, try again next year with new leadership. Want to get move ins? Go for it, just pay the price. Want 10 studs, well, you will play other people that do the same thing. Keep in mind this counts ALL genders and ALL SPORTS.
This is an easy fix, too easy really. Hey, they are all eligible as 9th graders, start getting them ready earlier. There has been "recruiting" since the 1930's in GA high school, come on now. If you want "equitable" I suggest something akin to this Form-B model. IF you want "fair" well, they have a a big one in Perry every October or so, go there.
Well, good luck this off season and I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
The 13 years I was in the great state of GA.....I kinda believed the "city" schools (Buford, Cartersville, Calhoun....etc) presented a bigger problem than ye olde private school houses....There will always be people who will sacrifice their integrity in an attempt to increase the number in the "W" column exponentially. No matter how bad things are, you all are still light years ahead of things out here in the Wild Wild West.....
Nice read.....good take.....keep 'em straight Dr.
