Re-Classification Nonsense

Well, surely, and no my name isn't Shirley, but by all that is sacred, one couldn't have thought that the man, they myth, they legend, the incomparable MOCS wouldn't have something to say about the goat rodeo that is the re-classification mess that is going on? Well, get ready, brace yourself, I actually, in fact, have a few observations.

Observation first: competitive balance is abject foolishness from a mathematical aspect as currently presented. Not one person finds it interesting that the impetus of this plan comes from the AD at a CITY school system?! Come on man, talk about the rabbit having the gun?! The funniest thing about this plan is, "it will help the schools that struggle so..." No hell it won't. You know what will? Them athletes that get poached going where they should go and the people getting better. If you ain't got no players and you suck in in AA, guess what, you don't have no players and you gonna suck in A. What do you do with the guys at the bottom? What do you do with the guys a the top? They can't move any further on their current trajectories. Anyway, that dog ain't gonna hunt.

Observation next: power rankings involves mathematics that the average American couldn't do with a ti85 much less a high school football coach/AD. This is garbage too. We have bitched and moaned about this system when it was "tried out" on the little schools several years ago. That was a hot mess. It has more merit mind you than competitive balance, but the formula needs to be simplified for the mathematically challenged if it is going to work.

Observation finally: come on guys, this shouldn't be that hard. Here's a thought: 6 classes, privates in, Form B rule (see my former posts regarding the Form B plan), and top 2 go. Yep, top 2. Back the season up, get rid of one of the off weeks, BAM, we ain't playing football the FIRST WEEK OF AUGUST, still done first week of December. Basketball could be cut down, baseball could start later, but that would be if we ACTUALLY cared about the kids and their general well-fare. We do not by our actions. These were meant to be extra-curricular activities and we have lost our way.

Maybe the state is too big to be governed by the GHSA anymore? Maybe it needs to change drastically to adopt to its MEMBER SCHOOLS' NEEDS? Maybe someone in charge just needs to say, "this is what we are doing, if you don't like it, kick rocks" and live with the consequences. No one system is going to make even the majority of the membership happy. I would argue though that there are enough intelligent people in the building to come up with something better than what we have seen. Let's hope so for the future of high school athletics in Georgia.
